What your website's design says about your prices
Before reading a single word, your visitors have already formed an opinion of your website, and so of you. A polished design shows the care you put into your work, and it prepares visitors for your prices. Well judged, it adds value as much as it reassures.
Picture a shopping street. You walk past a carefully lit window, where a few objects rest in silk-lined cases. No price is displayed. Inside, the sales staff wear suits, and you have to ring a bell to enter. Without stepping through the door, you already know that everything inside will be expensive.
A website can give exactly the same impression. Artistic photographs, a video on the home page, content clearly produced by professionals, and no price anywhere. Some visitors think it is exactly what they are looking for. Others assume it is beyond their budget, and leave without even asking.
In short
- Visitors judge how a page looks in a fraction of a second.
- Design is the first sign of trust they notice.
- A beautiful website also seems easier to use.
- The level of the website prepares visitors for the level of your prices.
- Too luxurious with no price reference, it can also make people hesitate.
A first impression in a fraction of a second
Open a page, and before reading a single word, you already know whether it inspires your trust. It is more than a feeling. In 2006, a team at Carleton University, in Canada, showed that visitors judge how a page looks in 50 milliseconds, far less than the blink of an eye, and that this first judgement stays remarkably stable when they are given more time.
This first impression colours everything else. A website that looks polished makes people want to read on, to believe what it says, and to imagine that the work will be polished too. Psychologists call this the halo effect, and we meet it everywhere. A white coat, a uniform, fashion models, actors, singers and so on. Each time, a single visible detail leaves us with a positive impression, then makes us imagine that everything else lives up to it, before we even know the whole picture.
Design, the first sign of trust
When Stanford University asked more than 2,500 people how they judged the credibility of a website, the most frequent answer was neither the content nor the reputation, but the appearance. Design came up in 46% of the comments, ahead of every other criterion.
50 ms
to judge how a page looks, before reading a word (Carleton University, 2006).
46%
of the comments on a website's credibility were about its appearance, the most cited criterion (Stanford University, 2002).
As early as 1995, two Hitachi researchers, Masaaki Kurosu and Kaori Kashimura, had also noticed that an interface judged beautiful seems easier to use. Specialists call it the aesthetic-usability effect. A beautiful website puts people at ease, and they forgive its small flaws more readily.
What a designer sees, everyone feels
As a graphic designer, I immediately see what creates this impression of quality. Your visitors might not be able to name it, but they feel it just as much:
Typography
Typefaces chosen for you, readable, with a real hierarchy.
Space
Room around every element, so that the essentials can breathe.
Colours
A short, consistent palette, drawn from your identity.
Images
Real photos of your work, sharp and well framed.
Details
Precise alignments, polished buttons, subtle animations.
Consistency
The same care from one page to the next, from the logo to the form.
The example of Apple and the luxury houses
Open Apple's website. Every product is presented like an exhibit, with large photos on a clean background, few words, plenty of space, precise typography and animations that follow the scroll. Before you even see a price, you know you are looking at a premium product, and the price feels consistent when it arrives.
Luxury houses take the logic further. Their websites look like the window in that shopping street, with no price in sight. The design does the selling long before the first conversation.
Conversely, a premium service presented on a website that looks hastily made sends two contradictory messages. Visitors no longer know which one to believe, and it is often the website they believe.
When the website impresses too much
Design is a double-edged sword. A website that is too luxurious can also make visitors think it is not for them, and send them away before they even ask for a price. That is the risk for a tradesperson, a freelancer or a small company whose prices are fair, but whose website suggests otherwise.
The answer is not to hold the design back, but to add reference points that reassure.
Six reference points that reassure about your prices
- A starting price, or a range, clearly displayed.
- A concrete example, a typical project with its budget.
- A free first contact, a quote, an audit or a no-obligation call.
- Client reviews from companies of every size, who look like your visitors.
- Faces, yours and your team's, to stay human.
- A simple tone, warm and free of jargon.
That is what I do on my own website. The design is polished, but my prices are shown, €550 for a logo and from €950 for a website, so that nobody wonders whether it is within their reach. On the contrary, I am the one putting my expertise within your reach.
A website that lives up to your work
Design is there to bring out the value of what you do, whether it is fine jewellery or renovation work. A landscape gardener's website should look as polished as the gardens they design, an architect's should reflect the rigour of their plans, a restaurant's the atmosphere of its dining room.
Many independent professionals do not realise how valuable their own work is. A builder finishes a marble bathroom, with carefully chosen fittings and perfect joints, and sees it as just another job. For their client, it is the bathroom they had always dreamed of. I often find myself saying it, what you do is beautiful. Well photographed and well presented, that work sells far better than any argument.
An outside eye helps you see it. A designer or photographer you trust can spot what makes your work remarkable, and knows how to show it.
And starting today, a few simple habits are enough to begin:
- Photograph every finished project, in daylight.
- Keep before and after pictures.
- Show the details up close.
- Ask your clients what they loved.
A website at the right level also attracts the right clients. It reassures those who compare, it justifies your prices to those who have the budget, and it frames the conversation around the value of your work rather than its price.
An investment that shows
A polished website takes more work than a template filled in quickly, but it works for you every day. It inspires trust, it seems easier to use, it prepares your prices, and it makes people want to write to you. That is what user experience is all about, as I explain in why your website is not generating contact requests.
And design does not start with the website. It starts with your logo, which gives its colours and its character to everything else, as I explain in why I draw the logo before the website.
A website designed for you
€950 excl. VAT
That is the starting point of a custom-designed website at EYN Studio, and it includes:
- A complete page in your colours, drawn on a blank page, never from a template.
- Your services, who you are, and every way to reach you.
- A first mockup, free, before any quote.
- No payment until you have approved a creative step.
- Three months of free corrections.
- Online in two to four weeks.
Extra pages, a shop or a client area are priced in the quote, always before we start. Everything is detailed on the web design page.
Your questions
Does a beautiful website really sell?
It does not sell on its own, but it inspires trust from the very first second, and trust is the first condition for a contact request. Studies show that appearance is the most cited criterion for judging a website's credibility.
What is a high-end website?
It is a website designed specifically for your company. Carefully chosen typography, real photographs of your work, space to breathe, polished details, and a site that is fast and accessible to everyone. High-end comes from the care given to every element, whatever your sector and your budget.
Should you show your prices on your website?
Often, yes. A starting price or a range reassures hesitant visitors, and saves you requests far from your rates. It is all the more useful when your website looks premium.
How much does a professional website cost?
At EYN Studio, a custom-designed website starts at €950 excl. VAT, with a free first mockup before any quote. The price then varies with the number of pages and the features, always quoted before we start.
Can a website template be enough?
To get started, yes. But a template is shared by many other websites, and it says little about you. A design drawn for your company sets you apart and shows the care you put into your work.
